I can’t tell you how many times I thought my furry friend had run out of sight, only to find her a few feet away, digging like she there’s a chance she could get to China. I was curious to find out why Bella was compelled to dig… and dig… and dig. I did a little research and found out that our best friends dig for a myriad of reasons. They dig because they’re bored, it feels good, to find moisture or a cooler area or just because of instinct. In a national survey, more than 83% of American dog owners said their dog dug holes and digging was among the top 10 common canine problems.
There’s several tips to help you get your pet to quit digging holes. If you think your dog is digging because it’s bored, it’s best to try to entertain him with toys and play time; and making sure he gets lots of vigorous walks or runs. If your pet is digging because he’s trying to control his body temperature, it’s a good idea to provide a protected area with plenty of liquids, shade and occasional sprays with water. The trick is to find out why your best friend is digging and it will be much easier to resolve the problem.
