Danger in Dogs…Grapes and Raisins

sick-dog.jpgI have a feeling that all of us pet parents are somewhat aware of the different foods to watch out for when it comes to the safety of our fur babies.  I myself have always heard to be careful not to feed them chocolate or cocoa.  But, I was not aware of the extreme damage a grape or raisin could have on a canine.

I recently heard a story that I felt compelled to share that came from a veterinarian out of Danville Veterinary Clinic  in Danville, OH.  The vet, Laurinda Morris, had her first case of a 5 year old male lab mix presenting with raisin toxicity.  The labrador had polished off half a canister of raisins and was vomiting and shaking.  Unfortunately, the owner saw some of these signs and symptoms, but did not take him in until a day later.  Morris had heard that raisins and grapes could potentially cause renal failure, but until this point had never come across it.  The dog’s blood pressure continued to rise, they could not stop his vomitting, and he spiraled into acute renal failure.  She did everything she could do to save this precious pup, but it was too late.  Sadly, the owners elected to euthanize their beloved friend.

Poison control said as few as 7 raisins or grapes could be toxic.  I know I have given my puppy Oliver a grape or two as a treat numerous times.  No more of that.  Also, keep in mind onions, chocolate, cocoa and macadamia nuts can be fatal too.  Please pass the word on to your pet lover friends.
