Eco Dog: Project Meatloaf?
According to research from Gazelle Systems Inc., a Newton, Mass.-based dining information company for the restaurant industry, baby boomers are eschewing the fancy and opting increasingly for familiar, so-called comfort foods like meatloaf.
Its survey, based on point of sale tracking of actual entrée purchases by credit card at casual dining restaurants throughout the United States, found that of the diners who ordered meatloaf, 31 percent were 45 to 54 years old; just 1 percent were “Gen Y” 18-to-24 year olds. Singles shy away from meatloaf in droves — fully 87 percent who ordered the dish were married.
What does this have to do with our Pets? Well, looks like those babyboomers are sharing a version of their moms’ recipe with Fido.
Bark magazine recently had a one page piece called Eco Dog: Good Eats. Apparently, the authors and their hounds are are big fans of the dish. They adapted a basic meatloaf recipe using lean meats and adding different grains and vegetables for variety. Don’t forget the garlic, yes they added that too. They would make a few of these at a time to freeze, using different flavors for variety. They say, ‘Use beef, ground turkey, chicken, or lamb, but would avoid pork or veal, which can be too fatty. In place of the oatmeal, you can try other whole grains, such as brown rice or quinoa.”
Here is the recipe for those interested:
- 2 pounds ground meat
- 1 cup cooked organic oatmeal
- 3/4 cup organic flaxseed meal
- 1/2 cup fresh organic parsley, finely chopped
- 2 large organic eggs
- 1 tablespoon with finely chopped garlic
- 2 cups fresh or frozen organic vegetables; use a variety, do not include onions. (Makes sense, your dog will probably loathe you after each meal).
Good luck!
