Finding the Perfect Name For Your New Cat

So, you’ve finally chosen your perfect cat or kitten and are taking him home to join the family. But what now? If your new cat is older or you’ve adopted him from a rescue shelter, he may have already come with a name he responds to well. If he’s from a new litter or you want to rename him, however, you may have a lot of thinking to do before settling on the perfect name for your little one. There are so many good choices for cat names, it may even seem overwhelming. Pet Owner Blog examines some great pet names, as well as some pointers to think about when finding something to suit your cat in particular:
…The name of your pet should somehow suit him. Thus, pay attention to physical traits and personality. For instance, if you pet a black cat, the names Onyx, Night or Smokey will suit him well. If your cat is white, he won’t mind being called Snowball or Icy.
If you’re not into physically descriptive names, there are a variety of personal influences that you can draw from for a name that not only fits your cat, but allows you to express yourself as his owner. For instance — are you into art? Maybe your energetic cat is a Salvador or a Jackson. If music or travel are more your speed, your options only grow.
Giving a musician’s name also sounds interesting. You can give him the name of your favorite composer– Mozart, Beethoven or whoever you like.
Consider the names of the places you love. For instance Rome, Alaska, Paris, Egypt, Britain, Milan and so on. It’s not a bad idea to name your pet after a place that always calls sweet memories to your mind.
My first childhood cat was named Berli, short for Berlioz — named not because of my passion for French romantic composition, of course, but after a similarly gray kitten in my favorite Disney movie. Naturally, that is the key: finding a name that suits your cat and you. Though the internet can offer suggestions, ultimately the decision is your own, as the author of the article found out:
Finally, I want to tell you how I chose a name for my cat pet. First, I decided to look for some interesting male cat names on the Internet. The first three I found– Einstein, Sleepy and Wizard–did not actually suit him. Though my cat was smart, I did not think he was smart enough to be called Einstein. As for Sleepy, it was not about him at all. The last one, Wizard, simply made me laugh.
In the end, the author decided to go with Anubis — a name reflecting an interest in Ancient Egypt and the cat’s mysterious nature. What will be the perfect name for your new cat? When you meet him, you will know.
