Halloween is a fun time for kids and adults, but it can be a stressful time for our furry friends. It is important to learn what to be aware of to protect your pet and stay safe this year. Continual doorbell ringing and people at the door (especially in costume!) can be stressful for a pet. Some pets may experience stress-related diarrhea or potentially injure themselves if crated or otherwise contained. Be sure to keep your pet in a quiet and safe place on Halloween.
Candles and Jack-O’-Lanterns within a pet’s range are a fire hazard. Wagging tails and frightened cats zooming through the house can easily tip over a candle or carved pumpkin, causing burns or a fire. Lastly, candy can be a major safety issue.
Candies, gums, mints, baked goods and chocolate containing the “sugar free” sweetener xylitol are especially poisonous, causing rapid hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and liver failure in dogs. Halloween can be a fun time if caution is used. Happy Halloween!

Thunderstorms scare many humans, but what about our pets and the fear that many experience at the sound of a nasty storm. Even when pets are safe inside their homes, the loud sounds can send many spinning. Thanks to a relatively new product called the Thundershirt, 80% of dogs are showing improvement. Separation anxiety, fear of fireworks and [...]

Just as we encourage our kids to eat their veggies rather than cake and candy, we can also encourage a love for veggies in our pets. The low calorie, low fat, vitamin and mineral-packed “treats” are a great alternative to the packaged dog biscuits and kitty chews. I’m realizing that alot of those packaged pet snacks and treats are really [...]

Many people are surprised to hear that dogs can actually be vegan and can be healthy vegans at that (cats cannot). There was a recent story in March on CNN where six veterinarians agreed that the nutritional requirements of dogs can be adequately met with a vegan diet. Veterinarian Michael Fox, former president of the U.S. Humane [...]

We hate to even think about it, but eventually our beloved pets are going to reach their senior years. It is important to keep in mind certain preventative measures once they begin those “golden years”. The first step in providing preventative care involves understanding when your pet specifically is considered a senior. Dogs that weigh [...]

As the Fourth of July holiday is approaching you might want to consider these suggested tricks that can help your pets from being afraid of fireworks. The Humane Society said that the number of runaway pets spikes every year at about this time because dogs and cats can’t handle all the fireworks and the noise. It might be smart to place [...]

Pet owners may be in for a rude awakening, as a new campaign looks to make unsuspecting Americans aware of the “other,” potentially more harmful, bug in the bed. A nationwide survey of pet owners conducted by Banfield Pet Hospital®, the country’s leading provider of high-quality veterinary care, reveals that three out of four pet [...]

Last week nine beagles that have spent their lives inside a university research lab in Northern California landed in the arms of animal loving foster families. Thanks to the Beagle Freedom Project these adorable pups were given a chance to experience freedom. The organization began in December 2010 when Shannon Keith received information that beagles who [...]
