Crazy For You
Have you ever wondered what it means when your furry friend gives you a “kiss” or a lick on your lips? When our pet licks our face, we naturally think that they are trying to show us affection. There’s actually a logical reason behind the real reason for this behavior.
While this theory could be true, in the wild, after the puppies start weaning off their mother’s milk, their mom goes out to hunt for meals and returns to her den where her puppies beg for food by licking her. She rewards them by feeding them and this is the most prevalent reason why our best buddies shower us with “kisses”.
When puppies become adults, they lick other adult dogs to show respect and acknowledge the hierarchy of the pack. They also lick to avoid confrontation or punishment by appearing submissive to their owners. So, to make a long story short, even though we know they love us, when they shower us with their much-loved kisses, they are trying to tell us that they recognize us as their pack leader by paying us with respect. Whatever the motivation, I’ll take kisses from my pup any day and I’m sure you will, too.
