Move Over “Fido”…

dog_with_crown.jpgWhat’s in a name?  When it comes to naming our furry friends, nearly half of American pet owners chose a human-like name, such as Sam or Sophie, according to a recent Associated Press-petside.com poll over more than 1,000 pet owners.  What’s the reason behind this, you wonder?  The lastest research shows that this trend actually reflects that there may be a stronger bond between people and their pets.

According to Wayne Eldrige, a veterinarian and the author of “The Best Pet Name Book Ever!” says “Pet owners who give their pets human names are more likely to see them as full members of the family.”  The most popular pet name?  According to one database of pet names maintained by Veterinary Pet Insurance, it’s Max, but not enough to give it any broad mention of popularity (less than 2 percent of all mentions).  Aside from human-like names that pets are given, owners say they named their favorite furry friends after favorite vacation spots, a childhood pet or based upon their pet’s looks.  So, whether your pooch answers to “Pete” or “Peaches”, there’s not just a wide variety of pets, but the pet owners who consider them family.
