I don’t know about you and your furry friend, but my pup, Bella, and I love to kick back and relax to our favorite tunes. I’ve always been a fan of music because it sets the mood and can get me motivated to get some things accomplished or help me wind down from a long work day. I did a little research, and wasn’t surprised to find out that music inspires our precious pet’s, too.
In fact, many veterinarians and animal behaviourists have found that music reduces stress and anxiety by providing a constant distraction to scooters whizzing by, kids running up and down the stairs and other daily occurrences that can often alarm your pooch.
Music that your pet associates with being snuggled up on the couch with you or spending other quality time together, can reduce her stress while you’re gone because she’s familiar with the music and is reminded of you.
Experts say that it’s not necessarily the type of music played, but the frequency and what you and your pup are up to when it’s being played. So, whether you’re into Country, Classical, Disco or “The Phantom of the Opera”, there’s a good chance your pet is, too.
You can also pick up a CD made especially with your furry friend in mind. The Laurel Canyon Music For Animals Company has a variety of CDs that their customers rave about. The CDs retail starting at $14.95.
Many animal behaviorists, veterinarians, kennel keepers and even pet owners now play music for their animals. Just one of several ways to deal with anxiety, the right kind of music can reduce stress, aid relaxation and alleviate depression. The shelter where I volunteer leaves a radio turned on low in the dog room at night. It provides background sound to soothe their sleep. Sleep is important to overall health and serves to keep barking to a minimum.
Music can have an even greater beneficial effect on dogs if they associate certain tunes with a positive experience such as cuddling on the couch with their humans or enjoying a gentle massage. This can be another tool in easing your dog’s stress if he suffers from separation anxiety.
So the next time your dog is stressing, try a little soft music. Whether you choose an album composed especially for dogs or one of your own favorites, it will soothe the soul with little expense and no side effects.
