Puppies Behind Bars

samba-capitolThe non profit group Puppies Behind Bars is not what it sounds like. The program actually teams puppies up with prison inmates — who live with and train the puppies to become bomb-sniffing dogs, or service dogs for wounded vets. It all began at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility in 1997 with just a few dogs. Now, Puppies Behind Bars is working in six correctional facilities, and nearly 500 dogs have been trained in the program.

Puppies Behind Bars is an amazing charity.  The video on their site brought me to tears. The organization is in need of funds to continue and expand their work. They pay 100% of all costs associated with raising puppies in prison, including dog supplies, educational supplies for the puppy raisers, teachers’ salaries, and travel. If interested in donating online or learning more check it out at www.puppiesbehindbars.com.
