Puppy Chow is Better than Prozac by Bruce Goldstein
I’m a sucker for a good book. Especially a good book where one of the main characters is a dog. I became interested as I read about this heartwarming true story of a man and his black labrador “Ozzy”. The author, Goldstein, suffers from severe manic-depression and his life is slowly falling apart in front of him. Aside from not being able to get out of bed without help, he has lost his job and his girlfriend. Just as life seems it can’t get any worse, he decides to turn to puppy ownership. As soon as day one he feels emotionally better due to his so called “furry antidepressant”.
It’s great to see how canine companionship and unconditional love can really help people deal with all kinds of issues. Many readers, who struggle with similar mental illnesses, have even written in thank you letters to the book’s website. Goldstein and Ozzy often make appearances together to do readings.
This sounds like a touching story- heartbreaking, yet joyous. A great dog-lover read.
