Cool In The Pool

pool2.jpgA great way to beat the summer heat for people and the pets we love, is to cool off in the pool.  If this is an option for you and your pooch, there’s a few important things to know so you can both enjoy your time in the water.

Pool safety issues for pets are the same as the ones for children.  Here are just a few of the issues you should consider:

  • Although many dogs love the water, shouldn’t assume that they can swim naturally.  You should never throw a dog into the pool; he may panic and not be able to climb the slick sides to get out of the pool.
  • Dogs who have always been excellent swimmers will gradually lose their ability as they age and become weaker.  You shouldn’t leave your dog unattended under any circumstances.
  • Make sure to keep you dog cool since heat and sunlight are more intense around a pool.  Watch for signs of overheating and don’t let your dog drink from the pool because the chlorine will make him sick.
  • Make sure your pool’s chemical balance is correct.  You and your pet can get sick if proper care of your pool isn’t maintained.
  • Chlorinated water can irritate your dog’s eyes. It’s a good idea to hose your dog down with fresh water to get the chlorine off.  When the two of you are finished playing in the pool, hose your dog down with fresh water to get the chlorine out.
  • A floating pool alarm device is a great way to make sure you know when your pool is being occupied.

Fun in the pool with your best buddy is a great way to keep cool and get exercise.  It’s easy to have peace of mind when you follow the guidelines to ensure everyone’s safety… including Fido’s.
