Summer Camp

camping_dog_01.jpgOne of my favorite things about summer is going camping with friends, family and my furry friend.  For the past 7 years, my Golden Retriever, Bella and I have spent countless nights under the stars.  In order to pull a camping trip off without a hitch, there are several things you need to know before you hit the road with road with your pooch.

First, although it’s pretty much a guarantee that your dog will be allowed to stay at almost any campground you choose, you should call ahead to confirm that Fido is welcome.  It’s also a good idea to be familiar with the pet policies at your desired destination ahead of time so you’re fully aware of what to expect when you arrive at the campground.  You should bring your dog’s food, leash, eating and drinking bowls, medication (if needed), lots of poop bags and a first aid kit.  If you plan on hiking, it’s a good idea to bring a collapsible bowl so your dog can keep cool and stay hydrated.

A long leash, cable or tether is great because your best buddy can do a little bit of exploring without you having to worry about him running off into other campsites or the forest.  A glow stick is a great idea because you can attach it to your pup’s collar and be able to clearly see where he’s at when it’s dark outside.

Keep in mind that the outdoors comes with lots of different animals and you’re on their turf.  I always have my dog sleep in the tent so I don’t have to worry about her safety.  I also bring her dog bed so she’s nice and cozy.

As soon as we arrive, I like to stop by the park ranger’s station and ask what types of animals are in the area and to get an update on anything that’s been going on at the campground.  They’re a great resource for information and it’s always good for then to know what my pup looks like and that she’s mine in case she gets lost.

As you can see, a little preparation goes a long way when you bring your best buddy with you to enjoy the Great Outdoors.  Happy Camping!
